Burda - March Preview and Spring/Summer Plus Magazine

Today is a two-for-one!  The early preview of the March BurdaStyle has been posted, as well as the full preview for the Spring/Summer Burda Plus magazine.  I also have a bit of a sewing update at the bottom of the post!

**************************************************************************

The Burda Style preview for March has been posted on both the Russian and German Burda websites. So far there are lots of frothy wedding dresses, some schlumpy looking oversized parkas, and a few pieces that have potential.  The preview of the plus sizes looks rather boring and predictable so I didn't re-post any of them.  Let's see what the preview has in store:

This dress is fine, but there isn't really anything special about it...

Not a fan of the sleeves - they look ill fitted and like an afterthought.

What were they thinking?  The fit on the top of this dress is atrocious.

Oversized sloppiness is a trend now, I guess.

I sort of like this dress... but if the top looks that low on the model
in reality it is going to be somewhere around my belly button.

I am oddly drawn to this photograph, though I have no interest in wearing any of these clothes.

The top is fine, but predictable.
I am not really a fan of the way the pants fit.

I think this dress has the potential to be cute.
Now, if only I could see through her arms to look at it...

I do like this cardigan top though.

Apparently Burda does as well... They show it several times...

Still like the cardigan.  Oh, and the lace skirt is pretty too!
So, ummm, yeah.  I am not too impressed.  Hopefully some line drawings and a more extensive preview will prove otherwise, but I am going to say March does not look as exciting as February.  Ah, well.  I do like the cardigan and the skirt in the last image, so hopefully the issue won't be a total bust.  Let me know what you think the comments!

Russia Burda has also posted the full preview of the Spring/Summer Burda Plus magazine.  This magazine features patterns in sizes 44-56, and after the early preview came out I was convinced to order a copy by my sister.  What is nice is that this issue seems to contain mostly new patterns, or patterns that have been graded up from the regular Burda size range.  I wasn't very impressed with last year's magazines since they mostly consisted of reprints from the regular issues.  And there are lots of patterns I think my sister will like in this issue, so I am happy I bought it.  Here are some of the better designs:

The dress that caused me to buy the issue...
Maybe not the look for everyone, but I really want to see
what the pattern pieces look like.

This Marilyn dress could be really flattering.
(In a less shiny fabric with better fitting up top, but still, potential.)

I am still in love with this jacket.

I think I might be sewing this top for someone when the magazine comes.

Color blocking potential.

Yes, this is a graded up version of the tall dress from last May.

I really like it with the short sleeves.

Again, I think it will look better in a not-so-shiny fabric.

This is a fun easy summer dress.

This is a nice dress for layering.

Though maybe I like it better as a skirt?
(Because then I can make one for me with minimal grading?)

Perhaps it is the color or the styling, but I really like this shirtdress.
I am thinking this could be a requested design.

Not really my style, but with some adjustment
I could see my sister begging for a version of this.
Of course, lest we forget that it is Burda we are talking about, not everything in this issue is all drool worthy fabulousness...

Sack dress made from an actual potato sack!
Seriously, those sleeves look like they tacked
extra fabric to the dress just because they could.

It looks like she is being eaten by fabric...

I am paying for this pattern?  Seriously?
So, ummmm, yeah.  Overall I am really excited by this issue, and I am glad I decided to take the plunge and buy it after the early preview showed up.  I mean, sure, there are a few boring and pointless designs, but I think the good ones more than make up for it.  There is a lot here that I think my sister will like, so I consider it money well spent.  What do you all think?  Is it better that Burda is coming up with new designs for the Plus issues?  Or did you like it better when it was a bunch of re-prints so you could safely ignore these patterns?  If you don't need the plus sizes, are you hoping (like I am) that Burda will put some of these designs in regular sizes in the regular issues in the coming months?  Feel free to discuss in the comments!

In other sewing news - I am back at it!  I have been a good little seamstress, but a very bad blogger.  Over the past week I have:

(1) I started working on my tutorial skating dresses, but my attempt at using a new pattern resulted in a quasi-wadder (I need to cut a new top because the pattern had a super low neckline - as in, I added 2 inches when I cut it out and it is barely covering half the girls right now even though the overall length of the body with the straps is correct).  So the tutorial is written, but sitting photo-less in my drafts folder since I have to re-group on the actual costume construction.  At this point I might just cut a new dress for the tutorial and go back to fix the wadder later, since I need to find some coordinating fabric.

(2) I have sewn two knit tops, from the teal knit I got at my recent National City Swap Meet excursion. The tops have been sewn, the reviews have been written, but no photos have been taken.  I blame the cold/flu/thing.  I have no desire to actually put on "real" clothes and get in front of a camera.  I expect once I am feeling better I will just do a massive photo shoot and bombard you all with finished projects for about a week.

(3) I am at work on some casual fleece jackets.  I know, I know... fleece?  Really?  But I really liked the "city" designs from the December Burda magazine, so I am at work on two of the jackets from that issue.  Burda used fulled loden (a special type of wool fabric) and I am using anti-pill fleece from Jo-Ann fabrics, so my results will probably be a bit less classy.  On the other hand, I am ignoring Burda's crazy thought of having the reverse-seams with the allowances floating about for the world to see, so, well, maybe I am ahead on that count.  I wasn't going to be making these right now, but the fleece was taking up more space than I wanted to allot it, and I figured since I was using cheap fabric it wouldn't be too tragic if the fit was terrible.  And since I hadn't sewn for over a month I thought it would be good to have a few warm-up type projects before jumping into crazy stuff like blazers with welt pockets, coats with pipping, and sequined skating costumes.  So these are somewhat more like wearable muslins, depending on how they turn out.  I am sort of excited to have casual jacket options that lack cartoon characters though.  Anyway, with luck I should be finishing these by the end of the week, so I can move on to my teal blazer jacket and the trench coat projects I have planned for February, which will allow me to finally finish up the unfinished projects from last year and move on to my year-long sewing goals for this year.

(4)  I have quite a few commissioned costumes I need to get to work on.  Granted, these costumes were commissioned for the big competitions that won't be happening until June, but I do want to get to work on them ASAP since I know I will have a lot to make.  I expect people may want to use them in May as well.  I have been planning quite a bit, and looking through fabric samples, and I should be ready to work on these soon.  I probably won't be documenting these on the blog (I don't like to show off designs I make for paying clients), but they will be taking up a significant portion of my sewing time during the next few months, so I will probably at least mention them from time to time.

So, anyway, it might not look like it, but I have actually been getting a lot of sewing done!  I am excited to show you all what I have been working on and to get actual finished projects up on the blog again.

Newsflash: New Vogue Patterns Announced!

Vogue has announced their latest collection of patterns for spring!  If drapey dresses and oversized suits are your thing - you are in luck!  This is the spring pattern collection for you.  Although, I have to admit, despite my best efforts I have been won over by more than a few of these patterns myself.  There are lots of designer looks, along with a few Vintage Vogue and some nice Easy Options as well.  Let's take a peak...

There are lots of springy designer patterns this time around:

V1339 - Guy Laroche.  I like the gathers on the skirt,
but I also know that this would not be a flattering look for me.
The pattern is ok, but I think I will pass.

V1340 - Pamella Rolland.  Not exactly a fan of the crumb-catcher look myself,
but I am sort of intrigued by it from a structural integrity standpoint.

V1343 - Tracy Reese.  This is a nice enough pattern for spring, but nothing I haven't seen before.

V1347 - Chado Ralph Ruchi.  Vogue seems to be embracing the oversized look this time around.

V1346 - Donna Karen.  This actually reminds me a
lot of the retro Burda reprint swing coat from last year.

V8876 - Marcy Tilton.  Another oversized sack dress...
Though the print on this makes me think oversized baseball jersey?

V8885 - Elizabeth Gillett NYC.  I think this is a nice pattern for a lightweight sweater.

I really like view D. Perhaps for my Missoni knit?  Not such a fan of the other styles.

V1341 - Donna Karen.  I LOVE the neckline.  Not sure if the other pleating details
might result in a "pregnancy pooch" look.  I think I like it enough to risk it though...

V1342 - Donna Karen.  Another pretty knit dress.  I love the gathering on the bodice.
I feel like this would look fantastic in a fabric with non-uniform stripes...

There were a few new Vintage Vogue patterns as well...

V8874.  I like the neckline and skirt, but I am not a fan of the location of that ribbon trim.

V8875.  A classic sheath dress with lightweight overcoat - I am sort of falling for this pattern,
though I don't know if I would actually wear it?
And there were a few other modern looks I took a bit of a fancy to as well...

V8872.  I rather liked this structured Vogue Easy Options dress.

The skirt and sleeve options leave lots of room for creativity.

V8882.  I love that this skirt is flat and fitted at the top, with more flare at the bottom.
I think I am going to get this so I can pare it with some of the Burda bodice patterns that would
otherwise  expect me to make a dirndl skirt.

V8884.  Classic trench.  I am always weak when it comes to classy coat patterns.

V8888.  A recent slip success by Clio has me thinking it might be nice to make one of my own...

V8888 - A luxurious silk bathrobe would be awesome too...
Oh, and Vogue did the dudes a few favors this time around as well.

V8890.  Yeah, I know, the only patterns for guys are suits and costumes.
But I think this is a pretty nice suit.

V8889.  They also tossed in a shirt pattern this time too!
Of course, not everything was springtime sunshine and roses.  There were a few head scratchers as well...

V8877.  Ok, there isn't anything inherently wrong with this oversized blouse - I am just using
it as a representative for the 20 other oversized blouse patterns Vogue also released this time around.

V1336 - Today's Fit pattern.  I know color blocking is a thing right now, but I have to say this is one of the least appealing color block patterns I have seen.  I mean, check out the back...
It makes the body look shapeless.  And the fabric on those sleeves?

V8887 - A Wardrobe pattern.  Somehow the oversized jacket and cut off pants make me
think of a teen who went on a growth spurt more than a sophisticated woman headed to work.

V8879 - Perfect for viewing the tramp stamp!

V8892 - Purse pattern.  Actually, with a few tweaks it could look a lot like the starfleet insignia from Star Trek...
And that's that!  Another Vogue release down.  Overall I think there are some nice looks for spring, but not too many stand out patterns.  Though I do really like those two Donna Karen dress patterns.  What do you all think?  Did you see anything that has you swooning?  Or has the oversized draped look left you wanting more?  I have to admit I haven't been too impressed with the spring looks from the rest of the Big4, but there are a few patterns here that might have me waiting for a sale.  Feel free to discuss in the comments!
